I looked at that link and it says the software only works on 15" and 17" models. From MacTracker it's MacBook PR (13-inch, Mid 2010), identifier is MacBookPro7,1 model number A1278, order number MC374LL/A (2.4 GHz). I'm sorry, I should have posted some unit data. The cable is probably OK to, so that's a spare in the event mine actually does fail. Now I have more backup and cloning space than I ever needed. There are no problems with the drives at all. If there is any good news to this story, here it is: I bought a 2.5 inch external drive enclosure and plugged all the other drives I had into it and tested them on a neighbors iMac. But what can I expect to pay for a logic board that's working properly? It's hardly anything that requires a degree in electrical engineering. Now the real question: How much? I can put the logic board in myself. I know the connections now are tiny, but surely there must be a way. Is there any chance I can fix the logic board? Why do the Scannerz people tell me it needs specialized equipment? I took a course in electronics about 20 years ago and I could find problems like bad traces and bad components and just replace them by re-soldering or replacing components. The nearest Apple store to me is about 2 hours away anyway.ģ. Changing the hard drive doesn't warrant that kind of money, IMHO. Is eBay trustworthy? Any third party sources? I refuse to take it to Apple because I let them do tests on it initially and they told me nothing was wrong, and when i wanted to change the hard drive they wanted hundreds of dollars to replace a drive that only costs about $60. If I decide to replace the logic board, who's a good source. Is this a known or common problem with 2010 MacBook Pro's? I don't want to spend any more money on the system if this a known problem. I asked them if I could fix it and they told me that to work on logic board requires specialized equipment and it would cost more to either try and fix it or have it done professionally.ġ.

I did this as well for the most part and the problems continued.Īfter all the testing was done I asked them what they thought was wrong and they said it could be a number of things, like damage from an electrical surge to a chip leaving it in a semi-working state, a flakey solder joint, a cracked trace on the logic board, or a problem with the logic board power.

I sent them the log files, and their e-mail response started with the phrase "I hate to tell you this but…."Īctually, they said that I should consider disassembling and disconnecting any connections that plug into the logic board because if they're erratic, the logic board may be issuing system interrupts because it could possibly be going through a series of connects and re-connects. All of these came back with system faults, errors, you name it and they're all erratic. They told me to unmount and eject the internal drive to take it completely out of the equation and then do a system bus and memory test on the system. I did this, but it wasn't giving interface errors, it was giving system faults. I shot the Scannerz people an e-mail for help and they told me to create a Phoenix volume, which is their version of an emergency boot drive and do interface tests on the internal drive to see if it was the cable and then send them the logs. This time I got a copy of Scannerz and started running tests on the drive and about 3 minutes into the test it goes ballistic reporting errors. I don't have anything against SSDs, I just don't think that kind of advice at that point was very good. Then came the barrage of "replace it with an SSD," which fortunately I didn't do.
I wish I had listened to him at that time because like an idiot I ordered a new drive cable and no change was detected after I installed it. At this point, one guy chimed in and suggested I run system tests on it with a product named Scannerz because it could detect weird problems and if I didn't isolate the problem I could end up just throwing money at a it. Then people started telling me to replace the drive cable because that was the problem. I went to another web site and everybody kept telling me to replace the HDD because that was the problem. The system wouldn't fail, it would just delay, sometimes for what seemed like a minute, then come back to life. Before I do, I'd like to get some input from this site's users.Ībout a year ago I started getting weird lockups.
